We are fa-mily (and here’s why my tree means so much to me)
Sister Sledge understood the importance of family – and we sure do too. After all, our whole business is built on helping you celebrate the life and story you’ve created with the ones you love the most.
For many, the tree is a powerful symbol of family and connectedness. It signifies strength, stability, growth, and wisdom.
And of course there’s the notion of a family tree, which is a record of lineage displayed in ‘tree’ formation. It explores the people in our past who have influenced our genetic make–up, helped shape who we are, and provided a foundation for our own story.
So, in honour of family day (which is Monday February 20, 2017 here in Ontario), we thought we’d take a look at the family tree in more detail, and some of the important things it symbolizes.
(We’ve also got a special, limited-time promotion to help you honour and recognize your tree all year long – more details at the end of this post.)
A family tree may look like a diagram of names and dates – but if you look a little deeper, it’s so much more than that. It’s an exploration of the unique personalities, cultures and ethnicities that have blended together over generations to bring us to this moment in time. Take a moment to reflect on your eye colour, the shape of your finger nails, your sense of humour, your greatest skills, your last name, perhaps your first name. The names on your tree have influenced every single one of these traits.
Like a tree that grows and changes with the seasons, the branches of a family tree grow and evolve. We learn all our firsts surrounded by family: to walk, talk, ride a bike, drive a car. And, more importantly, to develop a moral compass and compassion for other people and the planet. To share and be a team player, and – most importantly – to love and be loved. A family is our first and most important learning centre. This is where wisdom takes its biggest breaths.
With their deep roots and strong trunks, trees provide incredible protection. Your family tree is no different, offering a sense of safety and belonging even in our most vulnerable moments; a safe place to be yourself, unconditionally without judgement.
If you were to write your autobiography, it would likely include rich and vulnerable moments, woven together with the people who have had the greatest impact on your life. It would probably include the people who have given you their love, who have inspired, taught and raised you to be the person you are today – and likely, those you have mentored, motivated and shared your wisdom with, too.
Your tree is a symbol of this story. Of the things that make you unique. And of the people who matter most in your life.
As always, our Canadian made Slice pendant can be hand–stamped with the names of the people with the leading roles in your story.
